The Modern Problem

Our bodies are designed to be in sync with our planet and the nature that surrounds us. Throughout history, humans have lived in connection with the Earth, often walking barefoot and spending a lot of time naturally grounded. The Earth provides us with a constant stream of negatively charged electrons, which we absorb through our skin and spread through our tissues to neutralise the positively charged free radicals in our bodies. Without this, we are exposed to free radical damage and oxidative stress, which can lead to chronic inflammation and increased risk of cardiovascular issues, autoimmune disorders and weaker immune system.

Unfortunately, as a result of our insulated modern lifestyles, this electrical balance is often out of sync. We spend most of our time indoors, and when we do go outside our natural electrical connection to the Earth is cut off by the shoes we wear. We've deprived ourselves of nature's most powerful source of free electrons and antioxidants that have protected us throughout history.

In addition, we surround ourselves with a spectrum of electromagnetic radiation from computers, phones, Wi-Fi, and other electrical appliances. This electromagnetic radiation
increases the voltage in our bodies, further contributing to excess free radical damage in our cells and tissues and increasing the need for grounding to protect against this positive charge.

It's no surprise that we're now seeing record rates of chronic inflammation and health issues. The need to reconnect to the Earth is greater than ever.

The best way to do this is straight from the source! If you can, try and spend some time grounded outside - lying in your garden, walking down the beach or swimming in the
ocean.

How Grounding Products Work

It's quite simple really! A connection to the Earth can be made by inserting a metal rod to the ground outside, running a wire from the rod and connecting it to our skin. But don't worry, no need to go sticking a metal rod into your garden! Most modern electrical systems already have this system set up, with an 'Earth' pin in every mains electrical outlet. Grounding products, such as mats and sheets, are made of conductive materials and connect to the Earth pin. This allows free electrons to flow through them and into our skin on the other end, replicating the effect of connecting directly with the ground. Grounding products connect only to the Earth pin and not the live pins, so don't worry - they're completely safe!

Benefits of Grounding

According to the Journal of Inflammation Research, grounding has been shown to "improve sleep, normalize the day–night cortisol rhythm, reduce pain, reduce stress, shift the autonomic nervous system from sympathetic toward parasympathetic activation, increase heart rate variability, speed wound healing, and reduce blood viscosity."

Blood Viscosity

An interesting area of research has been the impact of grounding on blood viscosity. Blood viscosity refers to the thickness and stickiness of the blood, and increased blood viscosity has been suggested to be a risk factor in cardiovascular events.

It has been posited that grounding can increase the "zeta potential" on the surface of red blood cells, which refers to the electrical charge that surrounds them. When red blood cells have a higher zeta potential, they tend to repel each other more effectively, which reduces their tendency to clump together. This separation between cells helps blood flow more freely, keeping it less viscous and supporting better circulation.

By improving blood flow, grounding may naturally help the body maintain a state of balance and ease.

Inflammation

Grounding has shown promise in supporting the body’s natural response to inflammation. It has been suggested that the electron transfer process involved with grounding can help reduce inflammatory markers, which can facilitate faster recovery and potentially lesson the perception of pain.

A 2019 study found that participants who slept grounded after intense exercise reported less muscle pain and quicker recovery. Another study, published in the Journal of Inflammation Research, observed that grounding appears to accelerate wound healing by lowering inflammation, a key factor in wound repair.

By helping to balance the body's inflammatory response, grounding may support the body’s healing processes naturally.

Sleep

Grounding has been associated with natural improvements in sleep quality, potentially due to its effects on the body’s circadian rhythm and cortisol levels, which can influence how we sleep. It is possible that free electrons may help regulate cortisol patterns, the hormone often tied to stress, allowing for a more stable sleep-wake cycle.

Research published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine observed that participants who slept grounded experienced significantly lower nighttime cortisol levels and reported more restful sleep, suggesting that grounding may positively influence the body’s natural rhythms and responses, which are essential for good sleep.

Stress and Mood

Grounding has been linked to positive changes in mood by potentially helping to shift the autonomic nervous system toward a more relaxed parasympathetic state.

A 2022 study investigated the effects of grounding on meditation quality and stress reduction. In this randomized, double-blind study, participants engaged in meditation sessions while either grounded or sham-grounded. The grounded group reported enhanced meditation experiences, characterized by deeper relaxation and reduced stress levels, compared to the control group. These findings suggest that grounding may positively influence mood and stress during meditation, potentially by stabilizing the autonomic nervous system.

Published studies

This page presents a brief introduction to the research surrounding grounding, but this is just the start! See the links below to read more published research on the topic. Initial research is very promising, although more research is needed as it is still not fully know what the impacts of grounding, and grounding products are.
